I had the pleasure of having JP as a freind at several stages of my life. From our timing at commodore swim club playing jump or dive off the high dive or shark in the deep end. I also had the pleasure of having a party at my house where several bands played including one of JPs many bands and streetwise. I was also Fixture on the set of thame band stagebrush where my many antics were well known while spending time with JP John Deane in our band stool. With the many late jam nights at John Deane’s high rise apartment. I had the pleasure of JP being one of my best friends and could always count on him to help me with anything. But the most important he introduced me to my wife who brought me her love and the love of my two daughters. I will be forever truly grateful for his friendship.
Our first date was August 22, 2015. I fell in love so fast. He had me rolling with laughter and made me feel so important to him right off the bat. We were inseparable from that first night. He shook my shoulders and said "I'm gonna bring you an apple everyday" then smothered me with a big kiss on my lips so hard I couldn't breath. He brought me closer to our Lord. He would pray every day befora a meal and before heading to work.
He taught me unconditional love.
He will always be my love.
The first RUSH concert I had ever been to was with John Paul. It was 1979, our junior high years. I remember us rushing the stage during the last few songs and we squeezed all the way up to the front row. Afterwards, we were fortunate to get a ride from his older brother Bubba, who took us to his mother's house. We were wired with excitement and adolescent banter as we stayed up until the wee hours of the next morning, kidding around and challenging each other to see who could not flinch while getting shot in the butt with a BB gun.
We all flinched.
I always admired how John Paul could humor us all on our church retreats. He didn't even seem to try. It was just natural for him to say, or do something funny in his own laid back, classy kinda way.
I will always cherish my junior high years knowing I have the memories of John Paul Stevens as my friend and partner in mischief.
