Nicanor “Nick” Martinez

Nicanor “Nick” Martinez, 74, of Poteet, Texas, entered eternal rest on Friday, February 13, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on January 10, 1952, Nick was a proud lifelong resident of Poteet, Texas. He was a dedicated welder and truck driver who worked hard to provide for his family. Known for his strong work ethic and even stronger spirit, Nick built more than a career — he built lasting friendships and a legacy of love.
Nick loved to dance, especially when his favorite songs were playing. He was known for throwing unforgettable gritos that could light up any room and for singing along without hesitation. Whether gathered at a family celebration or simply enjoying a few cold Bud Lights with his brother, son, nephews, and friends, he brought laughter, music, and joy wherever he went. His presence was vibrant, his heart was generous, and his love for his family ran deep.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Pedro and Antonia Martinez, his sister, Victoria Mejia, and his nephew, Julian Aguero.
He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Michelle (Richard) Ortegón; his son, Nick Martinez Jr.; and his grandsons, Richard Laabs Ortegón III, Demetrio-Angel Laabs Ortegón, and Mikael-Camaro Laabs Ortegón. He is also survived by his siblings, Elena Martinez, Mary (Octaviano) Almaras, Paul Sr. (Isabel) Martinez, and Rudy Sr. (Jo Ann) Martinez; his brother-in-law, Tony Mejia; his nieces, Veronica (Edward), Valerie , and Kristen; his nephews, Rudy Jr. (Chrissy), Adam (Bettina), Paul Jr., Christopher, Fabian, and Vincent (Liz); his great-nieces, Adriana, Jamie (Gary), Alyssa (Jerel), Felicia, Jasmine, Suzie, and Daylily; and his great-nephews, Pedro, Paul III, Rudito, and Adam; along with many extended family members and dear friends who will cherish his memory forever.
Nick will be remembered for his hardworking hands, his joyful spirit, his booming gritos, and the way he made every gathering feel like a celebration. Though he may be gone from our sight, his music, laughter, and love will echo in our hearts always.
Pallbearers will be his nephews, Rudy Martinez Jr., Adam Martinez, Christopher Martinez, Fabian Martinez, Jerel Davila, and Gary Alaquinez; and his nieces, Valerie Aguero and Felicia Flores.
