Mary R. Canales' Obituary
Mary R. Canales, born in San Antonio, TX on December 30, 1929 went home to be with the Lord on April 2, 2023 at the age of 93. To her family and friends, she was known as “Grandma Mary”. She dedicated most of life to her Avon business, her faith as well as her family. In her younger years she enjoyed double dating with her favorite brother-in-law Gabriel and cousin Josephine (Pepe) ; they spent numerous nights out on the town, shopping and dining, going to the movies and having the best time. She enjoyed gardening, caring for plants and fishing. She had a “pet” rooster named Coco that protected her and her house. She loved being outdoors and she preferred to walk everywhere and anytime she passed by her beloved school, Navarro, she would beam with so much joy and say " Awwww, there's my school" she loved her school. She was always active and loved to dress up and fix her hair, chances are if you showed up unannounced, she was still in her rollers. Later in life she enjoyed crossword puzzles and reading. Towards the end of her life she loved to hum and sing church hymns and of course her favorite: Willie Nelson. Everyone loved to spoil her with her favorites: coffee, chocolate and sweet treats. She loved being surrounded by her grandchildren (17) and her great grandchildren (25).
Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Alfonso C. Canales. She is survived by her children: Diana Prechtel, Alfonso Canales and spouse Cecilia Canales, Steven Canales and spouse Sylvia Canales as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Her family will miss her sense of humor, her willingness to open her home to everyone and make them feel welcomed, and the love she had for her family.
