Martin grew up in the valley in the small town of Mercedes, Texas and graduated from Edcouch Elsa High School in 1952. While in high school he was in track & field and also served as one of the managers for the football team. Martin was also a member of the Future Farmers of America.
Interestingly his sister Lupe candidly remembers that while in the FFA he had won an award for raising over 100 chickens and then he had to bring them home and that somehow it became her responsibility to feed them all for a long time afterwards.
Immediately after graduating he wanted to serve his country and went straight into to the army and served in Korea with the 2nd Infantry Division and he also served in Vietnam with the 823rd Redhorse Squadron. After three years with the Army, Martin went on to serve in the Air Force and served at several Air Force Bases which included Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, TX, Henderson AFB in Neveda , Fort Dix AFB in New Jersey, Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Alaska and then finally here in San Antonio , Texas where he retired after serving 20 years in the Air Force on July 31,1973. At his retirement he had reached the rank of Staff Sergeant and was the recipient of two medals which included Air Force Longevity Award and also Air Force Good Conduct Medal.
His service did not stop there as he began his next 20 years working as a civil servant at all five Air Force bases here in San Antonio which included Fort Sam AFB, Lackland AFB, Brooks City AFB, Kelly AFB and then finally retiring at Randolph AFB. So all in all Martin served a total of 43 years at his final retirement.
May you Rest In Peace Dad, until we see you again.
