Mario Herrera's Obituary
Mario Gil Herrera Sr. departed this earthy life on April 6th, 2023 at the age of 90, in his hometown of San Antonio, Texas. His battle with health issues after the passing of his beloved wife of 65 years, Dolores Alcala Herrera, showed his strength and courage in facing life challenges with a smile. Despite the pain, Mario stayed strong until the end with his family right by his side.
Born in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas on August 15th of 1932, Mario was one of two sons to Juanita Garcia and Dionicio Gil Herrera. With his driven ambition and intelligence, Mario pursued his career in aircraft aviation for over 30 years. After his retirement, Mario spent his days with his wife and family catering to everyone’s needs and desires. From family gatherings to celebrations, Mario was always ready to be the host with open arms to everyone. He truly was the best husband, father, uncle, and grandfather that anyone could ask for. As the patriarch of the Herrera Family, he will forever be remembered for his loving legacy.
Mario married the love of his life, Dolores, on August 29th, 1953. The couple always said it was love at first sight. On February 2nd, 1968, they achieved their goal of obtaining legal naturalization in the United States. Together they had 7 children: Mario Gil Herrera Jr, Roberto Jesus Alcala Herrera, Juan Carlos Alcala Herrera, Armando Salvador Alcala Herrera, Eduardo Alcala Herrera, Jose “Chiquis” Fernando Alcala Herrera, and Maria Dolores Alcala Herrera.
Mario is survived by all 7 of his children as well as 26 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and 5 great- great-grandchildren.
The Rosary will be held at Camero Funeral Home on April 17th from 4:00 pm-8:00 pm. Mass and burial will initiate at St. Francis Cabrini Church.
