Our family is heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved matriarch, Maria Elena Gonzalez, who left us at the age of 78.
Maria cherished every moment she had with her family, but the holidays held a special place in her heart. It was during these times, those who visited her home were welcomed with the warm scent of homemade tortillas, Spanish rice, empanadas, and her famous tamales.
Although she constantly kept busy in the household, “Grammy, Eta, Grandma” and the many other names she may have went by, always made her grandchildren a priority. Family nights were filled with laughter, love, loteria, old maid and checkers. Simple as this may sound, it was these days spent together that was nourishment for her soul, a reason to get up in the morning and do it all over again.
And while it always seemed like the days were never long enough, she managed to carve out a bit of time to unwind into the wee hours of the morning watching her shows: Little House on the Prairie, Golden Girls and Gunsmoke and of course her favorite movie, La Bamba.
She was our teacher, our nurse, our therapist, a shoulder to cry on and always had a solution to our problems. She showed us how we can live a rich life filled with love and family. She is our Mother, our Grandmother, and a Mother to those who needed one as well as a dearest friend to those knew her.
To say she was loved was an understatement. She was a treasure to us all and while she may no longer be with us, we can take comfort knowing that her beloved pet dog “Baby” (Chucho) embraced her presence and will be by her side in the next life.
