Juan was a devoted Catholic and father with an exceptional work ethic that began working at the age of fourteen to help provide for his family. After working for almost a decade at Lucky Ranch Feed Lot, Juan was in retail/wholesale grocery management for various business in San Antonio including Handy Andy, Value Club, Fed Mart and Consumer’s Commissary on the south side of San Antonio.
Juan was a devoted husband and loyal friend that was always willing to help those in need. Juan was generous and humble man that loved his friends, enjoyed music and Sunday gatherings with his entire family. He enjoyed laughing with loved ones especially when he spoiled his fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
As a father, Juan was a great provider who loved the fruits of his labor. He enjoyed working with others and was a patient and supportive leader in the management business. He loved people with a great work ethic and never asked anyone to do what he wouldn’t do. Juan respected and considered a person’s sweat and tears as sacred.
Juan loved school and sports as a young man. He played baseball, football and basketball and was a 1964 graduate of Medina Valley High School. As a father, he received great joy from all four of his sons as football and baseball players during their time in high school as Medina Valley Panthers. As a lifetime Cleveland Indian fan, Juan followed his team with the upmost loyalty.
While he loved all sports, baseball was his passion. As a player at Medina Valley, Juan was a leadoff center fielder for the Panthers and he played up until the age of twenty-eight, in various leagues and known parks in the San Antonio and surrounding area. Alvarado was part of teams in the Highway 90 League of Castroville, the Bluebonnet, Colt .45 and Spanish-American leagues of San Antonio where he finished up his career as a third basemen for the Guzman Scorpions of Lytle, Texas. He loved his teammates and as a left handed hitter, love to play games in the middle of the day because “you can see the ball so well in the bright sunshine.”
