Josefa Benavides' Obituary
Josefa Benavides, age 87, entered eternal rest on April 23, 2026, in Poteet, Texas. Born in Jourdanton, Texas on March 23, 1939, to Philiz and Josefa Guzman Benavides.
Affectionately called Licha by her family and friends, she found hardship at a very young age. After losing both parents at a tender age of 3, she was cared for by her older sister, Amparo Camarillo, married young giving birth to two sons, finding herself a single mother at 22. She worked fiercely to provide for her sons, making sure they had everything they needed, at times making their clothes for school and family gatherings.
Working in the fields in the surrounding towns included Poteet, Charlotte, Dilley, and Robstown, Texas. She also traveled to Alamo Gordo, New Mexico and Fresno, California. Coming back home to Poteet to help with the construction of her sister, Amparo and brother-in-law, Jose Camarillo’s home they shared. Before moving to San Antonio where she found work at Levy Co, she then went on to work at Farah Clothing Store and eventually retired from the Concord Plaze as a housekeeper in charge of the entire 6th floor.
Licha also appeared in the Sal y Pimienta T.V. show working alongside Oscar Zamora and Lalo Astor in the 70’s. In the early 90’s she ran and operated her own bar, Skabaroo, for 10 years as a recreational hobby. Along with many other talents of sewing, knitting, and making flower arrangements, she was also a backup singer for the Hermanos Jimenez and enjoyed dancing. She will be deeply missed by all who loved her.
She is survived by her two sons, Frank B. Gonzales (Rosa) and Henry B. Gonzales, 4 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
She is proceeded in death by her parents, Philiz and Josefa Benavides; her infant daughter, Diane; brothers, Adan Abelardo, Ambrosio, and Arturo; and sisters, Amparo Camarillo, Maria Rodriguez, and Juanita Badillo.
We want to Express our gratitude to special nieces, Anita Herrera and Rosalinda Benavidez, and Tia Eva. We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Bexar Hospice team, Francisco, Kayla, Grace, Elise, and Father Javier. Thank you for your never-ending support.
Services will be held at Camero Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 6, 2026 with the visitation starting at 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and the rosary service at 3:00 p.m.
