I grew up in Crystal City and have many a happy memories of the Tavern, most involving the pleasant and efficient service of Ruben. Until I read his Obit I had no idea of his bravery and service during WW II. God Bless Him and the many other thousands like him. In this time we could really benefit from a love of country that Ruben displayed so beautifully. I send my sympathy and condolences to his friends and family. I think fondly of my time in Crystal City and extend best wishes to all.

I remember the Lopez' as they lived right down the street from us on Ave B. They'd often come over to my grandparents Marcelino and Carmen Paulino Alva to buy produce and chat for a while. I heard he was a hero and admired his stories.
I even ate at La Taverna a few times and enjoyed those delicious steaks and was always greeted with a smile and great service.
Rest In Peace Soldier.
